History of the Breed

The Royal Dog of Madagascar

Lore has it that in the mid 15th Century, to stave off boredom, sailors took dogs with them on their long voyages. Legend has it a ship carrying some of these little dogs got wrecked in a violent storm. This happened close to the port city of Tulear in Madagascar.

Some dogs escaped the ship and swam to shore at Tulear. These little white dogs developed into Cotons and breeds similar to the Maltese and the Bolognese. In fact, in some paintings from the Renaissance, these canines sit with royal ladies and notable personages of the time.

The natives of Madagascar fell in love with the dogs and domesticated them. Soon they became favorites of the nobles of the island. So much so, that there was a time when only people of the ruling class could own a Coton.

In 1971, a Frenchman brought some dogs from Madagascar to France. It's only since then that the Coton de Tulear has been recognized as a breed.

Characteristics

Cotons are extremely sociable. Always alert to play, the Coton will gleefully accompany their owners around the house. They make a peculiar sound like a grunt or a growl as opposed to a bark. They’re protective of their masters and will alert them quickly to strange noises.

Their intelligence, unique vocal sounds, and happy temperament make them very companionable for humans. They have a big heart and form strong bonds with humans. They get along very well with other dogs and cats, making them an ideal family pet.

A hardy breed, they seldom tire and seldom get sick. They live 15 to 19 years.
